Secession is the ultimate mechanism of States' Rights and self-determination for any free people. It was the exercise of secession that resulted in American Independence from England in 1776 and Southern Independence in 1860 and 1861. Though refuted as a right in post-Lincoln America, all of the Founding Fathers, northern and southern, viewed this as an essential right of the sovereign states for the guarantee of liberty for their citizens against the unconstitutional encroachments of a greedy federal government. It has rightly been said that the simple acknowledgement of the right of secession generally makes the exercise of secession unnecessary. As the federal government today grows more and more into an empire, leaving behind the republic of our forefathers, it becomes encumbent for all Americans to revisit the God-given principle of secession.
